The emission factors** used within Ekos’ ‘Business Calculator - lite’ are sourced from the New Zealand Ministry for the Environment’s ‘Measuring Emissions: A Guide for Organisations 2020 - detailed guide’.

The ‘Business Calculator - lite’ measurements are estimates only, as they are based on generalised consumption data rather than actual verified measurements. Those who would prefer to measure their exact business emissions can contact Ekos for a quote on this service.

**An emission factor is a representative value that calculates the quantity of carbon dioxide that is released into the atmosphere from an associated activity.

The consumption data and methodology is based on:

Flying

International Long-haul: Auckland - London (via Singapore) one way

International Short-haul: Auckland - Melbourne one way

Domestic: Wellington - Auckland one way

Radiative forcing (RF) is included in the flight emission calculation.

Company Vehicles

All of the company vehicles emission factors are assumed to be 2010-2015 vehicles.

Electric vehicles are assumed to be 1600-2000cc in size.

Hybrid vehicles are assumed to be petrol based and 1600-2000cc in size.

Motorcycles are assumed to be >60cc.

Non-Company Vehicles

Rental Cars are assumed to be petrol based, 1600-2000cc in size and 2010-2015 models.

Staff mileage vehicles are assumed to be petrol based, 2000-3000cc in size and 2010-2015 models.

Inward and Outward Freight

The air freight assumption includes radiative forcing. The international air freight assumption is based on a long haul flight (>3700km).

Sea freight is assumed to be a container ship.

Road freight is assumed to be via truck for international, and via courier van for domestic.

International Freight ‘Asia’ = Air distance between Auckland and Hong Kong.

International Freight ‘Europe’ = Air distance between Auckland and London.

International Freight ‘North America’ = Air distance between Auckland and New York.

International Freight ‘Australia’ = Air distance between Auckland and Perth.

International Road Freight = a distance of 300km has been selected as an over-conservative figure to account for international road freight. This was decided on the basis that the majority of international road freight for our customers is to/from airports/ports and factories.

Waste

Ekos has used the MFE office waste (without gas recovery) emission factor to be conservative.
